Needs & Wants

Gregor

“Did you have a good nap?” I smiled at him as I watched his eyes change, then return to their human-looking irises.

“You’re here.” He blinked as if he was trying to make sure it wasn’t a dream.

“Of course I am.” I touched his face. “You were scared and hurt. If you had told me to leave, I would have, but I got the impression that you needed me.”

Xavior wrapped his arms around me and gave me a hug. “I did. I do.” We were quiet for a while before he spoke again. “I’m sorry I ruined your plans.”

“You didn’t ruin anything.” I caressed his back. “We’ve had a lot happen recently. Sometimes you have to recognize when to slow down a bit, you know? You’ll always be more important than any plans.”

“Thank you.” We held each other for a while, then he shifted in my arms and looked up at me. “Though. . . I don’t want to spend the rest of the night in the room. We only have a few more nights. We should go out and do something fun.”

“What did you have in mind?”

Turns out, Xavior knew about a party in the Dragon’s Grove. It sounded perfect. Have some cocktails, watch acrobats and fire breathers entertain the crowds, meet other couples, and have a fun, relaxing evening.

When we arrived, it was anything but my idea of relaxing. It was half theme park and half street carnival. Dragons were everywhere in all shapes, sizes, and with various parts shifted. Some were even flying around, performing in one visual spectacle or another.

Fire-breathing dragons melted things into patterns while an ice-breathing dragon reshaped and topped them off with snow. Pixy dragons were in full force, delivering drinks and taking orders. Others had curled up with various guests or roamed and played as they pleased. With so many dragons and their partners present, it was breathtaking.

Most were with other dragons, but a few here and there had non-dragon partners. While I was at the bar ordering drinks, Xavior walked over with two women.

“Greg.” He reached for my hand, and I took his. “This is Delilah and Bonnie.” Xavior pointed to Delilah, a very tall woman—maybe ten or twelve centimeters taller than me—with dark brown skin and long black wavy hair that ended around her waist. Her eyes were a striking shade of light blue. Bonnie had a lighter skin tone, dark brown eyes, and natural black hair that showed off her pointed ears. “Delilah is a water dragon, and Bonnie is a mage.” Xavior grinned. “We were just talking about the show with the fire and ice dragons across the way, and I wanted to introduce you.” They were dressed in the latest fashions appropriate for a warm night, which meant that they barely wore anything at all.

“You’re human,” Bonnie said with some surprise as she shook my hand. “Don’t see many of you in the Grove. Are you a mage as well?”

I chuckled, “No. I’m a latent user at best, though Xavior thinks I can learn.
